Types of indwelling urinary catheters for long-term bladder drainage in adults.
BACKGROUND Prolonged urinary catheterization is common amongst people in long-term care settings and this carries a high risk of developing a catheter-related urinary tract infection and associated complications. A variety of different kinds of urethral catheters are available. Some have been developed specifically to lower the risk of catheter-associated infection, for example antiseptic or an...
متن کاملZinc eluted from siliconized latex urinary catheters decreases OprD expression, causing carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The activities of carbapenems against Pseudomonas aeruginosa decreased in the presence of siliconized latex urinary catheters (SLUCs). This effect was associated with the loss of OprD. The zinc that eluted from SLUCs is responsible for this phenomenon. We have found that zinc exerts a negative effect on the expression of OprD, the porin responsible for carbapenem entry into P. aeruginosa.
متن کاملExtra-Anatomic Urinary Drainage for Urinary Obstruction
Long-term drainage of the urinary tracts of patients with impassable ureteric strictures remains a major challenge to the urologist. Until the mid 1970’s the only viable, minimally invasive treatment was a permanent nephrostomy with all its sequelae, loss of quality of life, risk of tube dislocation, infection, and recurrent obstruction (Marberger, 2006). For decades, researchers experimented w...
متن کاملPleural drainage using central venous catheters
INTRODUCTION The objective of the present study was to evaluate the use of a single lumen 16 G central venous catheter for the drainage of uncomplicated pleural effusions in intensive care unit patients. METHODS A prospective observational study was performed in two intensive care units of university-affiliated hospitals. The study involved 10 intensive care unit patients with non-loculated l...
متن کاملLatex immunoassay of urinary albumin.
A new non isotopic immunoassay based on latex particle agglutination has been developed for the determination of albumin in urine. The assay consists in incubating the urine sample for 30 min at 37 degrees C with latex particles coated with a specific antibody, followed by quantification of the resulting agglutination by particle counting or turbidimetry. The stability of antibody-coated partic...
